Antiviruses are crucial to a healthy computer. Many people want to put harmful programmes and virus’s on your personal or work computer for many reasons ranging from using your pc to perform tasks to generate money without you knowing, Stealing information from you like bank card details  and passwords, to shut down a network or even just to prove its possible to get past certain security.

Everyday new viruses are created in the hundreds maybe thousands but we have our software that puts our knowledge of  viruses together to create a defence against as many attacks as possible. Here are some of the types of software you can get to protect yourself from an attack.

Real Time Scanner:
The real time scanner is a software programme that monitors all network data to hopefully intercept an attack before it reaches a computer. A signature is like a digital fingerprint of the virus. A good anti-virus program will have a database that has a huge collection of signatures. This is the main way a real time scanner will detect threats on the network.

On-Access Scanner:
The on-access scanner is an anti-virus software which scans files when they are changed or used in any way to detect any malicious activity. The scanner will search a file and compare it also to a data base of signatures   and compares the files extension to its configuration. If a virus is found in the file the programme may begin to clean and record the file / virus to store in the database.

On Demand Scanner:
On demand scanner is similar to on-access but with the option to perform scans over specific files, folders and even entire drives. This is usually controlled by the user of the pc who can select what they wish to scan.

Heuristic Scanner:
Heuristic scanning is a antivirus detection tool but also a prevention tool as it uses its knowledge of existing malware and virus’s and learns from it to better encounter new threats.

Compressed File Scanner:
Sometimes attacks can come hidden inside compressed files and folders. This means it’s a bit harder to detect but there is also special programmes specifically for searching inside compressed files and folders.

Scheduled Scans:
While not a type of software this is a utility implemented in a lot of anti-viruses. Scheduled scans can be set up scan your computer and try to detect malicious behaviour/files at intervals or specific times.

Script blocking:
Some sites that runs scripts may be compromised and used  as a tool to execute malicious code. This lead to many anti virus’s being able to monitor and scripts like java, visual basic and more.

Instant messaging protection:
Antiviruses may also come with an instant messaging protection. This is due to information being collected for spam and malicious attempts being tried over the instant messaging services.

Automatic Antivirus Updates:
The most important part of any antivirus is the update. The updates allow the antivirus to ensure it has all the information possible on any new virus development and also to ensure there is no failure or insecurity in the programme itself.

24/7 Support:
Some anti-virus vendors also employ 24/7 technical support which may also help when to assist with any malicious problems which may persist on your computer.
